Witnessing and Disguise
Kosinski and Céline’s Writings on Brutality

Presented at the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies
Annual Meeting
Montreal, Canada | November 1997

Abstract: There are many contradictions in the lives and writings of Jerzy Kosinski and Louis-Ferdinand Céline. These two authors can be viewed as either heroes or villains, authentic witnesses or opportunistic liars, idealistic humanists or as nihilists. They both engaged in a search for truth in their writings, yet they also both disguised aspects of themselves in their novels and in their public lives. In a way, they each transcended their past traumas, and yet, in another way, they could be viewed as having remained trapped within the spectacles of death that interrupted and shaped their lives.
